08.04.2025 | A megacity in green? Experiences from Ho Chi Minh City

What is the potential for green roofs in Vietnam’s bustling metropolis, Ho Chi Minh City? And what’s life like as an exchange student in a city of 10 million people? We spoke to Natascha Wegat, a Master’s student in Water Management, halfway through her three-month internship at the Industrial University of Ho Chi Minh City.

What support did you receive for your time abroad? I imagine Vietnam must have been completely unfamiliar territory...

My first crucial support came from Professor Petra Schneider, who initially suggested the project idea and established the contacts. She provided guidance on who to approach to organise everything from Germany. Here in Ho Chi Minh City, I have direct support from Professor Anh at the partner university, who is currently helping me obtain the necessary datasets. There are also other international students here who've been valuable for making connections and sharing practical tips about living here.

I was fortunate to have a student from Jena who'd been here for a year and a half to help me settle in. In fact, the German and French exchange students even collected me from the airport. The Industrial University also provided a designated contact person available at any time. Additionally, the International Department of our partner university arranged free accommodation, so I didn't need to worry about housing. The only complication was the visa process, which required obtaining specific documentation beforehand.

The classic final question: Would you recommend others from our Magdeburg-Stendal University to come to Ho Chi Minh City for a semester abroad?

Absolutely yes. In general, I'd encourage everyone to seize the opportunity for an international experience - whether it's an internship, research project or traditional study programme. Vietnam offers something completely different from home. You learn to handle unfamiliar situations, though you do need to be open to new experiences. It's ideal for those genuinely curious about discovering new things, willing to try them, and occasionally stepping outside their comfort zone without dismissing opportunities outright.

Thank you, Natascha, for the interview. Wishing you every success and rewarding personal experiences for your remaining time here. And fingers crossed for the data collection!
